Compare like with like
Record each perfume’s full name and concentration wording. Use the brand’s description for that exact version where available, and mark missing details rather than borrowing them from another edition. Copy a few key descriptors into separate columns: bright, dry, powdery, sweet, or woody, for example. Keep promotional phrases apart from concrete information. If one source promises universal appeal, treat that as marketing, not a useful comparison category. A recommendation cannot decide what you will personally enjoy.
Turn notes into a listening guide
When a description uses top, heart, and base notes, use those headings to organize what it says about the opening, middle, and later impression. Do not turn them into a fixed timetable. An imagined example might pair citrus and cedar in one perfume, with citrus and vanilla in another. Ask whether you are more curious about a dry or sweet direction rather than declaring them equivalent because both mention citrus. Descriptive scent notes are not a complete ingredient declaration; FDA guidance explains that fragrance mixtures may be labeled collectively in the United States.
Make a shortlist with an open question
Write one reason to explore each option and one uncertainty. For example: “Interested in the dry description; unsure whether the later impression feels too heavy for me.” Leave room for your own observations instead of copying an app’s longevity estimate as a fact about your experience. If you later encounter the perfume, compare your notes with the description without trying to force agreement. A shortlist of two well-understood candidates is more useful than a ranked list whose scores you cannot explain.
Take it with you
- Match the exact product version before comparing.
- Use note lists as descriptions, not ingredient inventories.
- Write one personal question for each candidate.
