Separate facts from impressions
Create one entry per exact product version. Record the name, concentration, date, and whether you encountered a bottle, a tester, or only a description. Put brand-provided notes in one area and your own words in another. “Listed as woody” and “reminds me of a pencil box” are different kinds of information, and both can be useful. If you have not smelled the product, label the entry as research only rather than giving it a personal scent rating.
Describe a moment, not a verdict
When you have an appropriate opportunity to experience a fragrance, note the setting and the approximate times of your observations. Plain descriptions such as “brighter at first” or “less noticeable later” are enough. Do not turn one encounter into a guaranteed wear-time claim. Record uncertainty: nearby scents, a rushed visit, or not remembering which version you tried. Follow product instructions and any personal medical guidance; the journal is not an allergy test. FDA guidance recommends checking labels and consulting a healthcare professional about suspected reactions.
Review patterns without buying more
After several entries, read them together and underline repeated preferences. Perhaps you enjoy dry descriptions but repeatedly dislike the sweet examples you actually encounter. Make three simple groups: revisit, enough information, and still unknown. Add one next question rather than automatically moving every interesting perfume to a shopping list. You can also record a deliberate decision not to explore something further. Keep performance expectations and app suggestions separate from observations. The point is a clearer vocabulary and fewer forgotten impressions, not a larger collection or a perfect numerical ranking.
