Ask for useful preferences

Find out whether the recipient wants fragrance at all. If they do, ask for an exact product name they already like, including the concentration or version, rather than a broad label such as “fresh.” Ask whether they would prefer choosing together. A photograph of a favorite bottle can help record the name, but it cannot establish the contents or prove that a similar-looking product is equivalent. Do not make a surprise gift into an obligation to test or wear something.

Keep safety questions out of guesswork

A scent-note list is not an ingredient list, and no photograph or AI match can establish allergy safety. Check the physical label and ask the manufacturer about unresolved ingredient questions. Follow relevant medical advice for known sensitivities rather than treating a familiar note as reassurance. FDA resources explain that fragrance ingredients may be grouped under a collective label in the United States. Marketing terms do not replace ingredient review. If a suspected reaction occurs, seek medical guidance; trouble breathing or swallowing requires urgent medical attention.

Make the choice easy to change

If preferences remain unclear, consider an invitation to choose together or a non-fragrance gift instead of guessing. If you proceed with a requested product, confirm the exact version with the seller and ask about their actual exchange policy before purchase. Keep the product information available for the recipient, without claiming that a scan authenticated it or cleared it for their use. A short note explaining why you thought of them can carry the personal meaning; the bottle does not need to deliver a guaranteed reaction, performance level, or perfect match.

Take it with you

  • Ask whether fragrance is welcome before choosing.
  • Defer ingredient concerns to labels, manufacturers, and clinicians.
  • Offer an easy alternative rather than a safety promise.
