Capture what is actually visible

Place the bottle against a plain background with even light. Avoid reflections across the brand and product name. Photograph the front and, if available, the bottom label or box. Write down the visible name, concentration wording, and volume exactly; do not complete a blurry word from memory. If the bottle is a decant or has no label, record that limitation. Never invent a batch code or concentration because the shape resembles a familiar perfume.

Compare candidates carefully

Look for agreement across the product name, bottle shape, label placement, and concentration. A similar bottle may belong to another version in the same range. Open the brand’s own product information where possible and compare the wording, not just the color of the liquid. If two candidates remain plausible, keep both in your notes and say what would distinguish them. An app suggestion is useful as a search lead, not as proof that every listed note belongs to the bottle in front of you.

Keep identity separate from authenticity

Even a close visual match does not establish what is inside, who filled it, or how it was obtained. For authenticity concerns, ask the brand or seller about provenance and their available verification process. Avoid declaring a product fake solely because an image match fails; packaging can differ and photographs can be poor. Finish with a record that separates confirmed label details, a candidate product name, and unresolved questions. That record remains useful when asking a shop assistant or manufacturer for help, even if no app can confidently identify the bottle.

Take it with you

  • Capture label wording before guessing the product.
  • Compare the exact version, not just bottle shape.
  • Keep visual identity and authenticity separate.
